A Teaching on Innate Primordial Wisdom

At Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche's request, on December 25 Guru Vajradhara the 12th Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa gave a teaching and an audience to over three hundred Dharma students from all over the world at the shrine hall of the Palpung Sherabling Monastic College.

Guru Vajradhara gave an extensive teaching, clear guidance and profound advice about how to become a better person by improving and refining our way of thinking as well as our conduct. He explained how the basic ignorance about the true nature of reality creates the samsaric realms. He also spoke about dharma and sacred Dharma, and how the two are different in terms of their purpose of accomplishing the aims of this and future lives.

Guru Vajradhara pointed out that samsaric beings fail to recognize the innate primordial wisdom, and instead perceive the duality of self and other. Due to that, attachment, aversion and other misconceptions arise, and because of following them, beings are constantly tormented by innumerable sufferings. Then, he taught how to develop loving kindness, compassion, bodhicitta and devotion through recognizing our own mind as the Buddha and regarding all sentient beings as our parents.

Guru Vajradhara explained that in order to actualize the innate primordial wisdom, we first need to have a general understanding of what it is and how it manifests. He presented a five-step method of realizing the true nature of our mind, a special quintessential instruction, precious like pure gold. First, we have to know our nature, know what we are; second, we have to feel what we are; third, we have to practice what we are; fourth, we have to become familiar with it and begin to mature into what we are; and fifth, we have to become what we are, ultimately, by realizing our primordial nature.
