Moonbeams of Mahamudra is a detailed explanation of the Mahamudra Meditation process written by Dakpo Tashi Namgyal. This text and the Mahamudra Ocean of Definitive Meaning are the two major Mahamudra Treatise for the Kagyu Lineage.
In Year 1 and 2 Rinpoche transmitted the general teaching on Mahamudra along with the detailed practice of Shamata (calm abiding).
From year 3 onward he will begin the teaching of Vipassana (insight meditation) which is, in the context of Mahamudra, the teaching on the Nature of Mind and Buddha Nature.
Since one cannot receive these deep and sacred instructions without prior meditation experience there are requirements to join the third year.
Since just receiving these pith instructions without practicing them wouldn’t be very beneficial and wouldn’t make us suitable to receive deeper instructions, there are practice commitments required.
Please Note that participating in Year 3 is essential to participating in Year 4 and 5.

Requirements required to join Year 3 of Moonbeams of Mahamudra Transmission

Moonbeams of Mahamudra is a 5 year transmission. The first two years were general teachings on Mahamudra and Shamatha (calm abiding). From year 3, the teachings on Vipassana and Nature of Mind begin.

Having taken refuge is compulsory to attend this transmission.

Receiving these teachings without meditation practice is not very beneficial; therefore to register for this third year one must fulfill one of the following.
Note that only students who attend Year 3 will be eligible to join  Year 4 and 5 of this Transmission.

I understand that to  receive Nature of Mind Transmission certain requirements are necessary.I hereby honestly confirm that I fulfill one or more of the following pre-requisites:

  • I attended Year 1 or year 2 of Moonbeams of Mahamudra Transmission at Palpung Sherabling, and I have received the teaching and practiced  Joy of Living 1 for 50 hours, Joy of Living 2 for 50 hours and Joy of Living 3 for 75 hours (or I am on the way to completing these 75 hours).
  • I haven’t attended yr 1 or 2 of the Moonbeams of Mahamudra Transmission, but I have completed the practices required for the three levels of Joy of Living and attended the teaching onthe Path of Liberation 1 and 2. (There is no need to have completed Path of Liberation 1 and 2practice requirements to join this Third Year of Moonbeams of Mahamudra).
  • I attended and completed the practice from the Shamatha Transmission given by HE Tai Situ Pa Rinpoche of the Mahamudra Ocean of Definitive Meaning.
  • I have completed the Foundation (preliminaries) practices from one of the Tibetan Buddhist Lineages: I contemplated each of the four thoughts, did 110,000 Refuge recitations and Prostrations; 110,000 Vajrasattva recitations; 110,000 Mandala Offering and 110,000 Guru Yoga prayer recitations.
  • I attended Year 1 and 2 of Moonbeams of Mahamudra Transmission but don’t have any of the other requirements. However I fulfill all the following requirements:
I am practicing Buddhist Meditation regularly for a minimum of 5 years and I have done 30 days of retreat (minimum 6 hours per day of practice ). This doesn’t need to be 30 days in a row – it can be several short retreats.

Commitments for this third year are: 100 hours of practices. Rinpoche will give the practices details during the transmission.
