As part of the Tukdam and Meditation Research Project, a Russian research team led by Professor Svyatoslav Medvedev conducted a scientific investigation into Tummo meditation practices at Palpung Sherabling Monastic Seat. This research, organized in collaboration with Palpung Munishasan Dharma Chakra Sangh, took place over seven days, from October 20 to 26, 2024, marking the team’s third visit to the monastery to study the effects of meditation.
Six tulkus and lamas from the monastic seat participated in the research. Each practitioner was interviewed about their meditative experiences, and the research employed a unique combination of EEG (electroencephalography) and thermography to monitor brain activity and body temperature distribution, both during and outside meditation sessions. This approach allowed the scientists to gain deeper insight into the interaction between the brain and body during Tummo practice.
At the conclusion of their visit, the researchers had the opportunity to meet with Guru Vajradhara His Holiness the 12th Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa.
